Selecting Home Server Hardware

My configuration includes:

  • P4 processor
  • 1G of memory
  • 2 USB ports
  • 1 ethernet port
  • video and sound
  • keyboard and mouse
  • monitor
  • UPS (American Power Conversion BE550)

To keep future changes flexible, I chose 2 disks from my current assortment:

  • 80G IDE -- to install the operating system and extra packages. This is far more room than needed. 5G would suffice.
  • 500G IDE -- to hold our files, logs and other user stuff. The more the merrier.

Install Disks

I set the 80G as master and the 500G as slave, using the jumpers and diagrams on the disks. I plugged each into the power and data cable, mounted them with screws, closed up the case and powered on. The computer has no OS, so it immediately displays a message "No Operating System Found".

Check the BIOS

Check the BIOS. Power off and power on. Hold down either F1, F2, F3, F10 or F12 as the pc starts. The BIOS should show both discs.
